A runoff election will be held in the city of Del Rio following the May 7 joint constitutional election, in which candidates running for office with multiple opponents were unable to secure 50 percent plus 1 of the required vote to win the position outright.
According to the unofficial results, the positions of mayor and councilperson District I are still up for grabs, and will be up to the voters to decide between the top two vote-getters in each one of the races in a date to be announced.
In the mayoral race Al Arreola was the top vote-getter, receiving 995 votes for the 40.7 percent, coming in second was Virgil Armstrong with 762 votes or 31.2 percent, followed by Alfredo “Fred” Contreras 437 votes, 17.9 percent, and Alejandra “Alex” Hernandez with 249 votes or 10.2 percent.
Arreola and Armstrong will be facing off in the runoff election in a date to be announced.
The other council seat still up for grabs is the councilperson District I position, where Jesus Lopez, Jr. received 314 votes for the 46 percent of the votes cast, followed by Mario Bosquez with 193 votes, 28.3 percent, and by Janice Sandoval with 175 votes or 25.7 percent of the cast ballots.
Lopez and Bosquez as the top two vote-getters will be participating in the runoff.
In the councilperson at-large Place C, former city councilperson Ernestina “Tina” Martinez will be coming back to the city council after defeating her opponent, also former councilperson Elizabeth “Liz” Elizalde.
Martinez received 1,310 votes for the 57 percent, versus 988 cast for Elizalde, representing the 43 percent.
Mayor Pro Tem Jim DeReus, the only incumbent looking for re-election, defeated challenger Arturo Rodriguez. DeReus received 629 votes for the 63.7 percent, vs. 359 or the 36.3 percent for Rodriguez.
Del Rio voters also elected to terminate the Del Rio Economic Development Corporation opting for a Type B corporation instead.
The election results will be official after canvassed by the city council.
Voter turnout was just under 10 percent according to the results posted by Val Verde County Clerk/Elections Administrator Generosa “Janie” Gracia Ramon. Of the 28,973 registered voters, only 2,893 actually cast a ballot in the May 7 joint constitutional election.
Local voters also participated in the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District board of trustees election, with two of the incumbents being re-elected and two newcomers joining the board, according to unofficial results.

Una segunda vuelta se llevará a cabo en la elección de la ciudad de Del Río, luego de que en la elección constitucional conjunta del 7 de mayo los candidatos que se postularon para cargos con múltiples oponentes no pudieran obtener el 50 por ciento más 1 de los votos requeridos para ganar el puesto de manera directa.
De acuerdo con los resultados extraoficiales, los cargos de alcalde y concejal Distrito I aún están en disputa, y quedará en manos de los electores decidir entre los dos candidatos con más votos en cada una de las contiendas en fecha por anunciar.
En la contienda por la alcaldía, Al Arreola fue el que más votos obtuvo, recibiendo 995 votos para el 40.7 por ciento, en segundo lugar quedó Virgil Armstrong con 762 votos o el 31.2 por ciento, seguido por Alfredo “Fred” Contreras con 437 votos, el 17.9 por ciento y Alejandra “Alex” Hernández con 249 votos o 10.2 por ciento.
Arreola y Armstrong se enfrentarán en la segunda vuelta en una fecha por anunciar.
El otro escaño del consejo que aún está en juego es el puesto de concejal del Distrito I, donde Jesús López, Jr. recibió 314 votos para el 46 por ciento de los votos emitidos, seguido de Mario Bosquez con 193 votos, 28.3 por ciento, y por Janice Sandoval con 175 votos o el 25.7 por ciento de los votos emitidos.
López y Bosquez participarán en la segunda vuelta.
En el concejal general Lugar C, la ex concejal Ernestina “Tina” Martínez regresará al concejo municipal después de derrotar a su oponente, la también ex concejal Elizabeth “Liz” Elizalde.
Martínez recibió 1,310 votos para el 57 por ciento, frente a los 988 emitidos por Elizalde, que representa el 43 por ciento.
El alcalde provisional Jim DeReus, el único titular que busca la reelección, derrotó al retador Arturo Rodríguez. DeReus recibió 629 votos para el 63.7 por ciento, frente a 359 o el 36.3 por ciento de Rodríguez.
Los votantes de Del Río también eligieron terminar la Corporación de Desarrollo Económico de Del Río optando por una corporación Tipo B en su lugar.
Los resultados de las elecciones serán oficiales después de que sean escrutados por el consejo de la ciudad.
La participación electoral fue de poco menos del 10 por ciento, según los resultados publicados por la secretaria del condado de Val Verde/administradora de elecciones, Generosa “Janie” Gracia Ramon. De los 28,973 votantes registrados, solo votaron 2,893 en las elecciones constitucionales conjuntas del 7 de mayo.
Los votantes locales también participaron en la elección de la junta de síndicos del Distrito Escolar Independiente Consolidado de San Felipe Del Río, donde dos de los titulares fueron reelegidos y dos recién llegados se unieron a la junta, según resultados no oficiales.
