Del Rio Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Jason Owens was appointed by the Biden Administration as the new lead of the agency. Owens will be replacing retiring Chief Raul Ortiz, another Del Rio Sector veteran.
In a statement announcing Owens’ promotion, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Owens is a talented, selfless, and inspiring leader, “Who is dedicated to the Border Patrol’s law enforcement mission, the men and women who fulfill it, and the country that we all serve.”
“I am inspired by his commitment to the mission, and am grateful to him for his continued service in this new leadership role,” Mayorkas said.
Owens has been with the Border Patrol for more than 25 years, most recently as the head of the Del Rio Sector.
Ortiz announced last month that he would step down from his role on June 30. Ortiz lead the agency since August 2021.
Del Rio is one of nine sectors along the southern border. The sector stretches 245 miles along the Rio Grande River and reaches as far north as San Angelo. The sector is staffed by roughly 1,400 Border Patrol agents.
Before his current position Owens served as the head of the Border Patrol’s training academy in New Mexico. He also served numerous stints in other locations along the southern and northern borders.
The Border Patrol, according to the agency’s mission, is responsible for patrolling between ports of entry in order to stop smuggling or illegal migration.
Ortiz lead the Border Patrol and its roughly 20,000 agents through the COVID-19 pandemic and Title 42 emergency restrictions that began in March 2020. These restrictions allowed agents to quickly return migrants over the southern border.
Mayorkas also announced that Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tae Johnson will retire after leading the agency in an acting capacity since 2021.

El Agente en Jefe del Sector Del Río de la Patrulla Fronteriza, Jason Owens, fue designado por la administración Biden como el nuevo líder de la agencia. Owens reemplazará al Jefe Raúl Ortiz, otro veterano del Sector Del Río.
