With the end of American Airlines service to Del Rio in sight, city officials are working several fronts in order to continue having an airline at Del Rio International Airport.
During the Feb. 28 city council meeting, Del Rio City Manager John Sheedy presented an update on the negotiations with the parties involved, stating that the city has started working with an airline recruitment service.
Earlier this year American Airlines announced the airline will cease to operate in Del Rio on April 3. Despite the high number of travelers arriving to and departing from Del Rio, the airline is leaving amid a national shortage of pilots, in order to focus on more profitable markets.
During the council meeting Sheedy said the city started working with Volaire, an airline recruiting contractor, that will be looking into other choices for the local market.
“Most carriers are very risk-averse, simply because of the pilot shortage. It’s likely that risk-mitigation will need to be offered to gain a carrier commitment,” Sheedy said.
The city manager also said other aspects to consider are the rescue and fire fighting equipment, and the Transportation Security Administration.
“We are going to try to reach out to TSA. The goal is for us to keep our TSA equipment in position as long as it’s possible, so it gives us a chance to get another airline,” Sheedy said.
The city manager said that the earliest commercial air service could be, if it is to be restored in Del Rio, would be the last quarter of 2023, however the deadline could extend into mid-2024.

Con el final del servicio de American Airlines a Del Río a la vista, funcionarios de la ciudad están trabajando en varios frentes para continuar teniendo una aerolínea en el aeropuerto internacional de la ciudad.
Durante la reunión del concilio municipal del 28 de febrero, el administrador de la ciudad de Del Río, John Sheedy, presentó una actualización de las negociaciones con las partes involucradas, indicando que la ciudad ha comenzado a trabajar con un servicio de contratación de aerolíneas.
A principios de este año, American Airlines anunció que la aerolínea dejará de operar en Del Río el 3 de abril. A pesar de la gran cantidad de viajeros que llegan y salen de Del Río, la aerolínea se va en medio de una escasez nacional de pilotos, para poder concentrarse en más mercados redituables.
Durante la reunión del concilio, Sheedy dijo que la ciudad comenzó a trabajar con Volaire, un contratista de reclutamiento de aerolíneas, que buscará otras opciones para el mercado local.
“La mayoría de los transportistas son muy reacios al riesgo, simplemente por la escasez de pilotos. Es probable que sea necesario ofrecer mitigación de riesgos para obtener un compromiso de algún operador”, dijo Sheedy.
El administrador de la ciudad también dijo que otros aspectos a considerar son los equipos de rescate y extinción de incendios, y la Administración de Seguridad del Transporte (TSA).
“Vamos a tratar de comunicarnos con TSA. El objetivo es que mantengamos nuestro equipo TSA en posición el mayor tiempo posible, lo que nos dará la oportunidad de conseguir otra aerolínea”, dijo Sheedy.
El administrador de la ciudad dijo que lo más pronto que el servicio aéreo comercial podría restablecerse, si se restablece en Del Río, sería el último trimestre de 2023, sin embargo, la fecha límite podría extenderse hasta mediados de 2024.
