Fort Worth-based American Airlines, a company that has been serving the Del Rio air travel community for the last four years, announced it will cease operating in the Queen City starting in April, the City of Del Rio said last week.
“The City of Del Rio has been notified, without warning by American Airlines that the airline will cease service to Del Rio on April 3, 2023,” the city announced.
According to a release by the city of Del Rio, a spokesperson for the airline mentioned that the airline is having regional issues and is showing overall low stability in regional markets.
“Reduction of routes to regional destinations has been a trend in the airline industry. Shortage of pilots is the main driver of those changes.”
“We were all completely shocked after receiving this news. I asked American Airlines, what can the City of Del Rio, Val Verde County and our citizens do to keep you (the airline) here?’ and it was an obvious response that this was a corporate decision,” Del Rio Mayor Al Arreola said following the announcement by the airline.
“Right now, we have reached out to our state senator and are working with our lobbyist group to keep the airline here. We are going to try our hardest to keep working with American to encourage them to stay,” the release continues.
Airport Manager Juan Carlos Onofre is confident that other operations will continue at the airport. “The airport will continue its other operations (cargo, airmail, charter, private flights, border security, public safety, pilot training support), without interruption and all our security measures in place for when the time is right for the return of a major airline to connect us either to Dallas or Houston. We will also explore other options to destinations like Austin or San Antonio,” Onofre said.
“American Airlines ceasing services to Del Rio International Airport is certainly frustrating and disappointing, especially since we’ve been at or near capacity on most American flights in and out of Del Rio,” City Manager John Sheedy said.
“For the last 4 years, American Airlines has provided an excellent service and has made travel to and from our relatively remote area more convenient and timesaving – especially important to the business travelers. So many people, both locally and regionally, have been using the service regularly and the loss of air service will be missed now more than ever.”
“Thank you to Airport Director Juan Onofre and all airport support staff for continuing to take care of our airport operations and customers, to our Airport Commission for their ongoing time and service, and finally, to the community that has supported and sustained our service during the past 4 years,” Sheedy said.
“We have already started, and we’re absolutely committed to working as hard as we can to re-establish air service to Del Rio and surrounding communities … as soon as we can find options that might prove attainable.”

American Airlines began operating in Del Rio in November 2018, averaging about 70 percent capacity over the last year. The airline has serviced more than 150,000 passenger to date via Del Rio International Airport.

American Airlines, con sede en Fort Worth, una compañía que ha estado sirviendo a la comunidad de viajes aéreos de Del Río durante los últimos cuatro años, anunció que dejará de operar en la ciudad a partir de abril, dijo la administración municipal la semana pasada.
“American Airlines ha notificado a la ciudad de Del Río, sin previo aviso, que la aerolínea dejará de prestar servicio a Del Río el 3 de abril de 2023”, anunció la ciudad.
Según un comunicado de la ciudad de Del Río, un portavoz de la aerolínea mencionó que la compañía está teniendo problemas regionales y muestra una baja estabilidad general en los mercados regionales.
“La reducción de rutas a destinos regionales ha sido una tendencia en la industria aérea. La escasez de pilotos es el principal impulsor de esos cambios”.
“Todos quedamos completamente conmocionados después de recibir esta noticia. Le pregunté a American Airlines, ¿qué pueden hacer la ciudad de Del Rio, el condado Val Verde y nuestros ciudadanos para mantenerlos a ustedes (la aerolínea) aquí?', y fue una respuesta obvia que se trataba de una decisión corporativa”, dijo el Alcalde de Del Río Al Arreola tras el anuncio de la aerolínea.
“En este momento, nos comunicamos con nuestro senador estatal y estamos trabajando con nuestro grupo de cabilderos para mantener la aerolínea aquí. Vamos a hacer todo lo posible para seguir trabajando con American para alentarlos a quedarse”, continúa el comunicado.
El gerente del aeropuerto, Juan Carlos Onofre, confía en que continuarán otras operaciones en el aeropuerto. “El aeropuerto continuará con sus otras operaciones (carga, correo aéreo, charter, vuelos privados, seguridad fronteriza, seguridad pública, apoyo a la formación de pilotos), sin interrupción y con todas nuestras medidas de seguridad para cuando sea el momento adecuado para el regreso de una aerolínea para conectarnos con Dallas o Houston. También exploraremos otras opciones a destinos como Austin o San Antonio”, dijo Onofre.
“El cese de los servicios de American Airlines al Aeropuerto Internacional de Del Río es ciertamente frustrante y decepcionante, especialmente porque hemos estado en o cerca de capacidad en la mayoría de los vuelos de American hacia y desde Del Río”, dijo el Administrador de la Ciudad, John Sheedy.
“Durante los últimos 4 años, American Airlines ha brindado un excelente servicio y ha hecho que viajar hacia y desde nuestra área relativamente remota sea más conveniente y que ahorre tiempo, especialmente importante para los viajeros de negocios. Muchas personas, tanto a nivel local como regional, han estado usando el servicio regularmente y la pérdida del servicio aéreo se extrañará ahora más que nunca”.
“Gracias al Director del Aeropuerto, Juan Onofre, y a todo el personal de apoyo del aeropuerto por seguir ocupándose de las operaciones y los clientes de nuestro aeropuerto, a nuestra Comisión del Aeropuerto por su tiempo y servicio continuos y, finalmente, a la comunidad que ha apoyado y sostenido nuestro servicio durante los últimos 4 años”, dijo Sheedy.
“Ya comenzamos y estamos absolutamente comprometidos a trabajar tan duro como podamos para restablecer el servicio aéreo a Del Río y las comunidades circundantes … tan pronto como podamos encontrar opciones que puedan resultar alcanzables”.
